Steamed Chocolate Cake ~ a healthy treat!

Greetings! :-)
I'm here with a super easy & healthy cake recipe! You need to steam it in the cooker. SO say goodbye to ovens! :-) No worries about setting temperature, preheating and all that kinda stuff! I love making cakes in cookers. I've been making them like this for a long time now and its one of my signature recipes.

Steaming a cake batter produces much softer cakes than baking it! Would I lie to you? Of course not! The texture is softer than a pillow and just dissolves into the mouth!:D

I used the new Fortune Rice Bran Oil to make this cake and it proved to be an excellent ingredient to make the cake soft, moist and fluffy!

STEAMED CHOCOLATE CAKE – THE RECIPE

Ingredients
  • 1 cup All Purpose Flour
  • ¼ cup Cocoa Powder
  • ½ cup Thick Curd (or yogurt or sour cream)
  • ⅓ cup Powdered Sugar
  • ½ tsp Baking Powder
  • ½ tsp Baking Soda
  • a pinch of salt
  • ¼ cup Vegetable Oil ( I used Fortune Rice Bran Oil)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
Others
  • Parchment paper
  • A cooker / steamer / large pots
  • Water (if batter is too thick)
Decoration
  • Chocolate sauce, melted chocolate, whipped cream etc.
Method
If you have a steamer or a cooker, use that. Invert a pan with slightly elevated sides and flat bottom on the pan. Fill it with water upto 3/4th of the inverted pan

If not, you can create a steaming effect. (check out the recipe below to find out how)
Grease & line a cake pan.

To yogurt (curd), add sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt & whisk extremely well for 1 minute until smooth

Set aside for 5 minutes. You’ll find lots of air bubbles on the yogurt.

Add oil, vanilla extract

Mix well.

Sift in the flour, cocoa powder

Mix well enough to incorporate flour mixture into wet mix.

Pour into prepared cake tin.

Place cake tin on the steamer.

Close with a lid. (I used a lid that went a bit inwards – hence, it came in contact with the batter & spoiled the final cake look)

Close the cooker / steamer lid.

Let it cook for 25-30 minutes or more depending upon amount of batter. Let it sit in the pan for 5-10 minutes.

De-mold the cake and let it cool completely before slicing.

You can decorate with any topping you like or eat it as is. I went for the simple melted chocolate.
