Bhel Puri - Mumbai Street Food

Every street, every beach and every hotel will have Bhel Puri (pronounced as Bhél Pooree) on their menu. It is impossible to come to Mumbai and leave without noticing this very popular snack. :) Bhel Puri is a mixture of Puffed Rice and other veggies & spices in a tangy tamarind sauce. It is also called Jhaal Muri in Kolkatta (meaning - Hot puffed rice) and Churumuri in Bangalore.
The best place to eat Bhelpuri is from a street vendor. If you are particular of cleanliness and insist on eating from clean restaurants, I don't think you'll get the authentic taste. :) There's something about a street vendor which makes the Bhelpuri so good!
BHELPURI RECIPE
(Print this recipe)
Prep time - 5 min   Cook time - nil
Makes 2 cups
You'll need -
2 cups Puffed Rice
1/2 cup finely chopped Onions
1/2 cup chopped Tomatoes
1/4 cup roasted peanuts
A few Crispy puris (Click here, and fry them longer to get crispy puris)
1/2 a lemon
5-6 tbsp Tamarind chutney  (I prefer adding a few drops of water and liquifying it)
2 tbsp Mint-coriander chutney
2 tsp chaat powder
Sev - for garnish
Coriander leaves - for garnish
Method -
Mix them all up! :)
Garnish with a few puris & some sev & coriander leaves
Serve immediately
Bhel puri is something that you should consume as soon as it is made. If left for a while, the wet chutneys and juices from the tomatoes make it soggy and unpleasant to eat.
Alternative: DRY BHEL - Skip the chutneys and you have dry bhel! :)

  1. I am crazy about street food. Whenever I visit Delhi, I go berserk eating all the foods that north India is famous for. A visit to Haldiram's is a must :)
The bhel puri looks packed with delicious flavours.

  7. this is one masterpiece Chef Kavi. the good old bhel puri brings back so many memories of enjoying bhel with my mom on our weekly market trips, we still try to go there to the same vendor who has now retired after handing his business to his son, and sits and watches his son do the job. I have even waited till 4pm on en number of days for him to open his shop and dive in.

  8. Bhel puri is my all time fav. I would eat it everyday if I have to. I am just happy seeing you post about it. I will totally eat from the street vendor because they would make the best bhel. All the dust from the street adds extra flavor to the bhel. :)

  14. I miss chaat and bhel puri from the street carts. I'd consume so much that I'd inevitably get sick- but it was just sooo good. And this looks very nice, will try- peanuts are such a good addition.

  16. Mouth watering & lip smacking. It is more fun to eat Bhel on the beach from the vendor-though this is not the most hygienic.

  17. Better far off to leave half the ruins and nine-tenths of the churches unseen and to see well the rest; to see them not once, but again and often again; to watch them, to learn them, to live with them, to love them, till they have become a part of life and life’s recollections
