Miscellaneous posts about Food

Condiments (Spread | Chutney | Pickle)

A condiment is an edible substance, like sauce or seasoning, added to the food to impart/enhance its flavor. Here's a list of condiments from around the globe - (both wet & dry)

Snacks & Savories

A snack is a portion of food that is smaller than the main course and is often eaten in between meals. There are a variety of snack-options both packaged and un-packaged. It goes without saying that fresh snacks prepared at home retain a lot of the nutritional value than those processed & packed. Below is a list of such snack items prepared at home.
Boondi | Khara (gram flour snack)
Dahi Puri (Mumbai street food)
Easy Garlic Bread (on a pan)
Masala Vadai (Lentil Dumpling)
Paneer Chilli | Chinese style cottage cheese
Paneer Pakoda | cottage cheese dumplings
Poha (rice flakes upma)
Puri / Poori (Fried Indian Bread)
Upma Kozhakattai (steamed rice balls)
Yelai Vadaam (steamed rice pancakes)

Side dish & Accompaniments

A side dish, as the name suggests is simply a food item that accompanies the entrée or the main course of the meal. We can have both dry as well as gravy side dishes. Choose from the following accompaniments for your bread (Roti, Puri, white bread, Tortilla etc.)

Chole Masala | Chickpea / Garbanzo bean Curry
Dum Aaloo | Baby Potatoes in Yogurt-Almond gravy
Green Peas and Spinach Masala
Kadai Mutter Paneer | Cottage Cheese Curry
Kathirikkai Gotsu | Brinjal in Tamarind gravy
Malai Kofta | Vegetable Balls in rich gravy
Mung Ki Sabji | Green Gram Curry
Paneer Chilli | Chinese style cottage cheese
Pav Bhaji Masala (Mixed Veg Curry)
Soya Tamatari | soybeans in tomato gravy
Ragada (White Peas Curry)

Microwave Recipes

Microwaves help us save a lot of time in cooking! They are less messy too. Here, you'll find yummy dishes cooked wholly/partly in the Microwave. Some of them are not authentic recipes. I've adapted the recipe to suit Microwave cooking. But they taste almost as exactly as the real thing.. :-)
Poha Chivda (Rice flakes snack)

Main Course

The main dish is the primary dish in a meal. When at home, we usually don't go through all the courses of a meal. We simply eat according to the time and our hunger. And lunch & dinner both, generally consist of a main course only. In this list, you can choose from a variety of dishes for a main course. Whether eating as lunch or dinner; or planning for a 7-course meal, these dishes can form part of the main-course. Some of these can't be had by themselves. They need to be eaten with some curry/side-dish/accompaniments. Since there are way too many of them, I've filed them under a separate head.

Khus Khus Puri (Poppy seeds fried bread)
Pav Bhaji (Mixed Veggie Curry with Buns)
Poha | Rice Flakes Upma
Puri / Poori | Fried Indian Bread

How To....

Keeping in mind that a lot of my readers are amateur cooks or don't know anything about cooking except that they have an interest in it, I've decided to post a string of How to..? posts that will feature some common food or food related topic. If you have any doubt on anything displayed, please feel free to email me or drop a comment here.

Puri / Puchka (for Pani Puri, etc)

Healthy Recipes

→ Health is Wealth
→ Don't count your calories, count your nutrients
→ Food enriches life
If these are some sayings you truly believe, then you would love the following recipes. They are high in nutrition, low on junk and leave the tummy happy after eating. They need not be some exotic salad or juice... They can be something as simple as our staple Dal (Lentils) But their significant contribution to our body's nutrients-requirement cannot be met by any supplement.

Chole Masala (Chickpea in Onion-Tomato based Curry)
Cucumber Bread Cups
Dum Aloo | Baby Potatoes in Yogurt gravy
